Fring & Station (mobile apps)

Fring is a mobile application which allows its users to make free internet calls (using the cell phone’s data plan or WiFi connection) as well as chat on IM platforms like Skype, MSN, ICQ, Twitter, Google Talk, Yahoo, AIM and any SIP network.

This is not the first mobile application that I use, moreover it was part of my job to try as many mobile IM software as possible. I have tried with Morange, Yahoo Mobile, Velvet Puffin and so on but I found Fring, together with Station (zed’s new application, launched in September) to be the best ones. All of them have of course different apps, which allow social content, as well as IM. What I most liked about Fring was the possibility not only of chatting but also of making voice calls. When IM I liked the fact that you could chat directly in the conversation window (which is in most applications of the kind not so - you chat on a kind of message window and then publish in the chat window - this means, you cannot read your friend’s messages when you are writing)…Fring now also allows file-swapping, that means you can send files to your friends when IM…Cool!

Zed’s Station has also a very good design and is easy to use. This app is more a kind of mobile sharing application, which allows its users not only to chat with IM but also to upload content to zed’s website, acces their blog (read as well as post), access all of your email accounts from your mobile phone and download content. It’s design is really great, you can have it in eight or nine colours and it’s very easy to browser…

Anyway, the biggest problem I see to these mobile applications are the carrier costs for internet connection, which are (at least in Spain) still very high…Hopefully this will change in a few months…!
